Malawi introduces VAT on non-resident digital services from April 2026
During April 2026, Malawi introduced a new VAT regime targeting non-resident companies supplying digital services to consumers in the country.
Under the new framework, which took effect immediately, foreign suppliers must register from their first sale made to local Malawian consumers and charge VAT at 17.5% on the supply.
Rwanda introduces VAT on foreign digital services from April 2026
At the end of April 2026, the Rwanda Revenue Authority confirmed the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on digital services provided by foreign suppliers to Rwandan consumers.
Under the new framework, which took effect immediately despite only recently being passed by parliament, foreign suppliers must register for VAT from their first sale to local consumers, charge VAT at 18%, and remit it to the Rwandan tax authorities.
The authorities have also confirmed a three‑month soft launch period, running from May to July 2026, allowing affected businesses time to register.
