UPDATE: Swiss government confirms likely delay for the 0.7% increase to the standard VAT rate

1 December 2025

The Swiss tax authorities have confirmed that the increase in the standard VAT rate from 8.1% to 8.8% will now be postponed until 2028.

This VAT rate increase was approved in October 2024, and at the time, implementation was expected from the beginning of 2026.

It is hoped that, once introduced, the increase will generate an additional CHF 4.2 billion to help cover the pension deficit caused by a national referendum vote to raise state pensions in September 2024.
