Romania proposes VAT rate increases on sparkling drinks, hotels, and catering supplies

From 1 January 2023, the Romanian tax authorities are proposing to raise the VAT rate on certain goods and services, including:

  • Fizzy drinks from 9% to 19%
  • Hotel and similar short-term accommodation from 5% to 9%
  • Supplies of food and non-alcoholic drinks made by caterers (including cafés and restaurants) from 5% to the 9%
